Black Stewart Tartan dress.
Stewart tartan comes in more than one colourway, and this is the version for anyone who wants the pattern without the brightness of the classic red. Black Stewart keeps the same crossing lines — red, green, blue, and fine gold threading through — but sets them against a black and navy ground instead. It’s a subtler read from across a room, and a genuinely different dress for it, even though the tartan family and the cut are the same as our Royal Stewart style.
The Cut
This is a fit-and-flare dress: fitted through the bodice, with a defined seam at the natural waist where the skirt opens into a fuller, flared shape. The neckline is a simple round cut, and the sleeves are short and fitted rather than puffed — a clean silhouette that keeps the focus on the tartan rather than on embellishment elsewhere. It’s the same considered approach as the rest of our tartan dress range: let a genuinely bold pattern be the whole point, and keep everything else about the cut restrained.
Why Black Stewart Reads Differently
Put a red-ground tartan and a black-ground tartan next to each other and the difference is immediate — the red version announces itself, while the black version lets the colours sit inside the dark ground rather than dominating it. That makes this dress easier to wear somewhere more formal or subdued: an evening event, a winter wedding, a dinner where you want tartan without it being the first thing anyone notices. The pattern is still genuinely there, still detailed, just quieter about it.
Fit Through the Waist
Because this is a structured fit-and-flare cut rather than an adjustable tie-waist style, the fit through the bust and waist matters more than it would on a more forgiving silhouette. Check your measurements against the size guide rather than guessing — a dress built around a waist seam won’t have much give if you size it wrong in either direction.
How to Wear It
Black heels are the obvious choice, and for good reason — they don’t introduce another colour to compete with the tartan. For daytime or colder weather, dark tights and ankle boots do the same job with more coverage. Because the tartan is darker, this dress moves more easily into evening and formal settings than a brighter red tartan would — it’s a genuine option for a winter dinner or a more subdued festive event, not just a daytime piece.
Part of the Stewart Family
If you want the same cut in the brighter, more traditional colourway, this dress is also available in Royal Stewart tartan — same silhouette, same construction, a completely different mood. Between the two, you’ve got a tartan dress for a festive daytime event and one for something quieter and more formal, without changing the cut you already know fits you.
A Practical Note on the Pattern
Because the tartan check runs in both directions across the fabric, expect the pattern to align slightly differently at the side seams than it does across the front panel — this is normal for a woven check garment and not a flaw in the piece. It’s the same construction reality that applies to any genuine tartan fabric, ours included.
